[DESCRIPTION: On screen text. How do I get my financial life back on track?] [AUDIO:] [ Music ] >> Hi, I'm Jim Lewis, a retirement counselor with Prudential. The past few months have been a flurry of ups and downs for lots of people. Now that people are trying to move forward, I'm getting lots of questions about how to get one's finances back on track. First, take a deep breath. We have all been through a lot. And while it can seem overwhelming, you can do this and we're here to help. [DESCRIPTION: A view of the Prudential website. It's right on your online account page, and it's an easy way to get a clear view of where you stand. You answer a few questions about your finances and goals and get instant feedback about your current standing and suggestions on where to head next financially. [DESCRIPTION: On screen text. A few other thoughts: If you look at your account and notice a dip in your balance, don't panic. While your first instinct might be to withdraw at market dips, remember that if you do, you'll miss out on potential market rebounds. Historically, staying invested will help you recover and grow over time, even though it may be tough to see when it's happening. Also, pay attention to your investment strategy and make sure you're diversified. Instead of looking at the performance of a specific fund or investment, look at your overall portfolio. Check your investing risk and make sure it matches where you are in life. For example, if you're nearing retirement, you likely shouldn't have an aggressive portfolio. If your risk exposure is not in line with your own risk comfort, consider reallocating. Remember that while your retirement account is important, it's one part of your overall financial health. If you weren't ready financially when COVID hit, you know firsthand the importance of being ready for whatever might happen next. Now is a great time to consider an emergency fund so that you'll be more prepared if unexpected expenses come up. If you had to back down savings during the pandemic, take time now to figure out how to make up for lost time. Maybe you do this by increasing your contribution rate by even just 1%, or perhaps take a new look at your budget to see if you can pay down debt or save more for your financial goals. These are all a part of beginning to recover financially. Only you know exactly what you need -- and if you don't, we're here to help. You always have access to great do-it-yourself resources through the 'My Financial Life' tab online. And if you need personal help, set up a virtual one-on-one with a counselor like me who can give you more information about the features available through your retirement plan.
