I made a transfer, and now my money moved back. Why?] [AUDIO:] >> I'm Doug Bazley, a retirement counselor with Prudential. Recently, I've had a quite a few people reach out and ask why their money moved back after a recent investment transfer. Here is what I tell them. For those of you who've transferred existing balances prior to the end of the quarter, you may have seen those funds revert back to match your current investment allocations. This happens when you make an investment transfer, but you did not also update your investment allocations and you're utilizing the auto-rebalance feature. You see, while you may have transferred existing or current balances from one fund to another in your account, it's your investment allocations that determine your future contributions and this is what auto rebalancing is based on. If you did not update your investment allocations when you made a transfer, then you might have seen those funds transfer back to match your current allocations on the auto-rebalancing date. Rebalancing is actually a really useful tool. It's a form of risk management that helps to maintain your investment strategy over time. It helps prevent your portfolio from becoming more or less aggressive than desired due to the changing market conditions. When utilizing auto rebalancing, your portfolio will automatically realign to your chosen allocations on the auto-rebalance date. If you are utilizing the goal maker investment service, auto rebalancing is a built-in feature, and these portfolios rebalance at the end of each quarter. Please take a moment to review your investment allocations online or using the mobile app to make sure it matches your risk tolerance, time horizon, and desired portfolio allocations. If auto rebalancing is available on your account, consider turning it on and making a mental note of your next rebalancing date. [ Music ] [DESCRIPTION: On screen text. Keep in mind that application of asset allocation and diversification concepts does not assure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market. It is possible to lose money by investing in securities. GoalMaker's model allocations are based on generally accepted financial theories that take into account the historic returns of different asset classes. But, of course, past performance of any investment does not guarantee future results. Participants should consider their other assets, income and investments (for example, equity in a home, Social Security benefits, individual retirement plan investments, etcetera) in addition to their interest in the plan, to the extent those items are not taken into account in the model. Participants should also periodically reassess their GoalMaker investments to make sure their model portfolio continues to correspond to their changing attitudes and retirement time horizon.
